MF DOOMOWEEN

A while ago, I stumbled on a video about Tyler the Creators philosophy of releasing music on Mondays rather than Fridays...

Something about the "drive to work" being the best opportunity for people to really feel and appreciate new music as it came out.

I personally couldn't relate because I 1) don't have a car 2) don't have a job.

Still, the thought stuck with me, so I reached out to some people with two questions:
1) How did you discover MF DOOM?
2) What contexts do you listen to his music in?

Here are some answers I collected...

LISTENING TO MF DOOM IN 2026

I was looking for new records and saw the Madvillain album.
Got curious.
Saw that DOOM was considered That Guy Wot All Rappers Listen To.
And he was what they said he was. Unfortunately, this is after he passed away.

I usually have DOOM for driving music.

CDs. Caught myself in a mad thunderstorm on the expressway in the middle of the night with take me to your leader album playing, and it might have just been the most perfect 40 minutes of my life - Ok-(Whole-8568, Reddit)

I first heard a doom song when I was 9 years old, it was Tick Tick and I heard it from a FIFA compilation from an African American guy who was great at FIFA and clearly was extremely cultured in music.

I listen to every single doom song, including all his aliases. Even the ones that aren’t on Spotify, are on my local files. With doom there are 2 ways to listen to him: first, while doing something else/zoned out- you’re not focusing on the lyrics, just listening and enjoying. Second, full focus on the lyrics, basically microanalysis.

Doom isn’t for everyone, but clearly his influence has gone beyond possible expectations. There is a reason why they call him “your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper” -

My cousin and I are big music people. He put me on to MF Doom when I heard “Doomsday” for the first time.
I started with CD, currently streaming it while getting my day started, and slowly collecting his vinyls. -

My Uncle put me on DOOM in 2004 when I was 13.

That summer I was asking my uncle about music and he introduced me to a lot of music (Nas,Wu Tang Clan,Mos Def,J Dillia) and one day as we were heading to his house to hang out he was playing Madvilliany. I was like nothing I’ve heard before and I was intrigued so I asked him about it. He told me it was a collab album by producer Madlib and rapper MF DOOM and asked if I wanted him to burn me a copy. I said yes and took it and listen to the album multiple times and I just loved it.

It was my main cd that I listened to during my rides to school that fall and I became a fan. At one point my CD player got destroyed and i replaced it with a MP3 player. I didn’t get to see my Uncle to that December and when I did I was able to get all the music that he burned for me before on to the mp3 player including 2 MF DOOM albums. Operation Doomsday which was DOOMs first album (I didn’t know about the KMD stuff at the time) and his latest album at the time MM Food and those became my favorite albums.

This would continue into the next year with the Danger Mouse collab Danger DOOM and that one was very dope for me since I was a huge Adult Swim fan at the time. He also started introducing me to the other aliases he had like Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah and with that I became a fan for life.

Anyways I still listen to DOOM til this day and I can’t imagine ever stopping

As for me?

I never experienced DOOM at the peak of his career.

Sanduna recommended MF DOOM to me the first time he met, and Ilistened through his discography while playing Elden Ring.

It never really clicked with me until I watched a Rhymes Highlighted video on Meatgrinder, but seeing the wordplay laid out so clearly turned me into a fan overnight.

Those are the two ways I consume DOOM - either as background sound (Mmm Food is often on when I'm cooking) or with Genius Lyrics and/or Rhymes Highlighted open, studying every word intensely. - Sid, Germany
